Fall 🍂 is my season! And it's finally chilly out today, with the forecast for the next ten days looking hopeful! I am my most productive and most creative self in these months, filled up with all the energy and excitement that comes with creating new stories. Also, I'm finally going to leave the house today after a bit of a self-imposed house arrest, and I'm going to wear flannel. IT'S TIME! 🖤 Don't forget to check out the Writers Tarot at the link in my bio! For editing and book coaching inquiries, I'm now scheduling for 2020 spots. Also, we have limited space for our annual writers conference in November. Have you ordered your Writers Tarot deck yet?! 🔮After a year of brainstorming, outlining, writing, drawing, re-configuring, stressing over this deck, loving this deck, and guiding our vision into fruition, me and @somethingofadandy are real proud of this baby. Being that it's finally October - thee BEST time to indulge - our goal is to sell 400 decks! 400 decks means we can cover first-run printing. 400 decks means we can get our deck in front of hundreds of writers and their friends. 400 decks means we can start to help people love writing by helping alleviate the blocks they struggle with. I'll love this deck no matter what - it's literally magickal (have you seen the readings I've been posting??!! ) - but hitting this goal would be such a bonus affirmation of all the work and love we poured into these cards 🖤 Swipe your deck and one for a gift at the link in my bio! How else can you help? SHARE this post, tell your friends! Lots of love, #writingcommunity!
I haven't done this much research for something since college! But I'm loving the process even more than I expected I would 🖤 Research is arguably the best part of being a writer, and this new book is pushing me into new and undiscovered countries of thought, which is crazy exciting. My office, however... it's a mess. 📚📘📚📙📖📗 . . . . . #amwriting #officemess #booksofinstagram #writerscommunity #writersofig #writersofinstagram #booksofig #authorpreneur #authorlife #october🍁 #octoberreads #research #bibliophile #libraryfinds
I was inspired by @libraryofamoonchild this morning to get back into this book. Our October TBR lists are so similar 🖤 but I had trouble feeling connected to this book. (But look at that cover 👀😍 ) So this is where I'll be when I'm done writing today! Today is a writing day. 📚 And it's full of distraction being October 1st because all I want to do is put up Halloween decorations and watch Penny Dreadful and read and pet the dogs, the list goes on... But I'm excited about this commitment I've made to myself. At the end of each of these days, it feels insanely rewarding to look at the word count I've accomplished, to see my book coming to life, and to inch closer to querying! And bonus today: I have to go to an actual library that isn't the internet for some research! So, updates on that adventure coming later 🖤 . . . . . #writersconnection #writerslife #amwriting #creativewriting #CreationMagick #writerscommunity #writingcommunity #journal #journalwriting #notebook #writersofig #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #writeyourstory #wrinspo
Make magic. 🖤 It's week two of my new three-day workweek schedule and while it's going well, it hasn't been without challenges. I've already tried to negotiate with myself and sacrifice my writing time tomorrow to work (like, whyyyyyy? ), but I've mentally shot that down. I'm working double-time today to help myself feel more at ease about working on my own book tomorrow, and that's okay. That's a good compromise for now. I'm just really realizing (as if I didn't know--I guess I did, but was purposely blind to it ) that I'm a bit of a workaholic, but that comes with the territory of getting to do what you love! Just trying to work it all out, piecemeal these thoughts and feelings slowly, and get comfortable in a space where I can work on my own creativity without stressing about it; a space where I can make my own magic. 🖤 Also, @ctgphoto is a magic-maker! . . . . . #writerscommunity #writingcommunity #writerslife #authorpreneur #bookcoach #writeyourstory #write #amwriting #amworking #womaninbusiness #entrepreneurship #writethatbook #wrinspo #writelife #authorlife
I turned down a potential client yesterday. 📚 In my line of work as an editor and book coach, it's so important that I vibe with my clients, that I am an expert in their genre, that I understand their goals and how to execute them, that they trust me, that we respect each other, and most important of all, that we like each other! It's truly a partnership. I know so many entrepreneurs who take on any and every client, and I get it--I've done it--because it feels wrong and scary to turn down 💸. But abundance doesn't come from working as much as you can. Abundance comes from working on what's right for you. . . . . . #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #authorpreneur #bookcoaching #bookcoach #amediting #editor #editorslife #writerslife #wrinspo #editorsofig #editorsadvice #advice #writingadvice #partnership #womenwhowrite #womaninbusiness #bossup #writeforme #businesstip
It's 5 o'clock and another full day of writing on the books ✍️📚 Feels damn good. If you're waiting to start something, or feeling stuck in the trenches of a project, I feel you, but know that it'll get better, easier, and feel really rewarding if you just carve out dedicated time to work on it. And don't forget to enjoy the work. Put on something comfy, brew a cup of tea, release judgements about what you're doing or why you're doing it from your mind, settle into the work, and just take your time. One of my new commitments to myself is that I'm cutting my hours back and reserving Tuesdays and Wednesdays solely for writing! As I settle in today, preparing to work on my novel, I'm thinking of this spread I pulled from the Writers Tarot. This is a character spread, and I pulled this for one of my MCs, Mara. The spread is purposely positioned in a circle to remind you that your character's traits are always in communication, always changing and evolving. Mara is like The Playwright in that she's a bit sociopathic--always looking to control the emotions of others in service of protecting her own. But I have to remember that, like McCullers, Mara is a deeply creative soul whose ideas are often dark and misunderstood. Like a true embodiment of the Suit of Quills, Mara is an innovator, a rare species, a person whose perspective is confusing and inventive, but she is limited by the heartache the Suit of Stones represents in her here. She's limited by her trauma, by the expectations she thinks others have of her, by her own caged heart. ⚫ I created this deck as a tool for introspection and inspiration, and it helps me everyday! I took a break from The Bone Witch because I was honestly having trouble getting into it. But I just closed the cover on The Wicked Deep, and I definitely recommend checking out this gem! I read this book in 3 days, enraptured by the rainy, mysterious town of Sparrow and the magical Lumiere Island. This book is such a great mixture of folklore and magic, set both in contemporary times and centuries ago. You can taste the salt in the air and hear the sea sloshing around you through Ernshaw's vivid account of a cursed town, haunted by three sisters bent on revenge. 🌒🌕🌘
The full moon in Pisces has us all reflecting on where we've been and where we're going. Pulling spreads from the Writers Tarot helps us understand how much we've grown as storytellers, and how much our changing lives effect our changing skillsets. I've spent many years evolving my own craft so that I might pair the talents of The Architect and The Gardener in service of my characters 🖤 Plus, this deck offers me new concepts and tools to utilize so that I'm always expanding and growing into a better writer! . . . . #writerstarot #writerstool #amwriting #fullmoon #fullmoonritual #fullmooninpisces #writingrituals #wrinspo #writingprompts #writinginspiration #tarot #witchywriters
If you know me, you know I'm (really ) obsessed with Virginia Woolf. This was the first card that @somethingofadandy sent me and my heart exploded 🖤 As the Queen of Prose card, Woolf represents intuition and the deep emotional power of narrative. Prose writers and the conventions and genres depicted in this suit are akin to the water element, guiding writers into their craft with both fluidity and resolve; with grace and power. Pulling Woolf's card in a spread instructs writers to use her famous stream of consciousness technique as a tool, or to look to her legacy as your literary guide. 🔮 You can pre-order your Writers Tarot deck NOW in time for the holidays. I've been working on the Writers Tarot deck with @somethingofadandy for about a year, and I couldn't be more excited to announce that IT'S AVAILABLE NOW!! 😭❤️ *takes break to cry hard* This deck idea popped in my head one day and took me by storm. I knew I wanted to create a fun tool for writers that could help them evolve their craft while also giving them a physical product they could deeply connect to. This 78-card, fully illustrated deck features some of the most amazing writers of all time, tons of tools and inspiration, plus genre and concept cards. The deck comes with an instructional booklet that teaches you how to lay three different spreads: 📚 The Character Spread 📚The Plot Builder Spread 📚 The Prompt Spread This deck is intended to be used as a tool to help writers elevate their skillset while having a lot of fun and learning even more! You can snag your deck at the link in my bio!!
Let's talk about FAILURE. There are so many schools of thought here, and maybe all of them carry some truth: Failure is a fallacy and it only helps you learn. Failure only happens because you carry a limiting belief about yourself. Failure is the manifestation of your fears (i.e. fear of success ). For me, I never feel like I have enough time, and as I get older, I fear that I've wasted too much time, which can feel like I've failed on a pretty epic scale--because you can't get time back. But the reality is that there's always time now and ahead; that success is about making time for the things that matter--for the things that fulfill you and help you work towards living authentically. As a writer, I can constantly hear my characters living their lives, calling out to be written down, and I need to make more time for them 🖤 . . . . . #writingcommunity #writerscommunity #writersofig #writer #writersofinstagram #amwriting #failurequotes #failures #learningfrommistakes #character #fictionalcharacters #wrinspo #author #authorpreneur #writerslife #authorsofinstagram #authorofinstagram #authorsofig #authorsofinstagram #instawrite
For International Literacy Day, I celebrated this book 💚 Robinson Crusoe was my first brush with Literature. My first-grade teacher read it to us everyday after lunch, and whole all the other kids slept on their desks, I nestled into the jungle with Crusoe. I was enthralled by this book, and have revisited it often. Showing up to do the work is hard sometimes. Ideas are exciting, but execution can be frustrating and intimidating. It's the perseverance through this adversity that we create for ourselves that truly brings a project to fruition--especially a book! 📚 Last year, @thatchrisdaley and the awesome team at TEDxPittsburgh asked me to contribute a poem to their TEDxPittsburghWomen zine about what it means to me to show up. This is that poem. I was incredibly honored and thrilled, but the question reminded me of the hard work that showing up really is. It also lended me that satisfactory feeling that comes after you do the work and can hold the product! 📚 I'll post the published piece in my stories. When writers find me, they're usually at one of two stages in their process: they have a finished draft of their manuscript and they're excited but nervous to launch into the editing process, or they're at the oh-shit-here's-a-heap-of-papers-and-thoughts-and-writing-and-seriously-what-do-I-do-now?! stage. Helping those writers re-structure and refine their work is my FAVORITE part of my job! My job as an editor and a book coach is to create clarity, to show writers the path they know is there but can't see, to pull their stories out into the light for them and to help them build and shape and mold their narratives to be as strong, impactful, and cohesive as possible. 📚 I usually start this process by spreading everything out and making piles, each with their own to-do list. From there, I can draw the connections that need to be made. For me, this is my third eye, my own version of intuition. My divination powers are all rooted in storytelling, and being able to map out and nurture a hidden story in its most authentic and powerful form is incredibly satisfying for me and them. This is the process I lovingly went through with @diana patton and so many others. . . . . . #storytelling #stories #storiesmatter #storytellingchangestheworld #tellyourstory #editor #bookcoach #bookcoaching #followfollow #follow #writeyourstory #amwriting #writersofinstagram #writersofig #writersofinsta #manuscript #novelwriting #storyediting #photography📷 #authorphoto #entrepreneurlife #womaninbusiness #entrepreneurship #divination #thirdeyeopen
🍂 I get so hungry for creative connection this time of year! And there are some new faces in the house, so let's meet and chat books and creativity and about all the weird things in our heads and in our 🖤s! You can use the template below (or your own! ) 👇 📚 Creative passion: I'm lucky to do what I love for a living--writing and editing books + coaching authors. I've always been so in love with words, but I also have a deep love for creating and publishing printed pieces of work. Books are art. 📚 Hogwarts house: Ravenclaw 🕊️ but if I'm honest... All the tests say I'm a Slytherclaw. And, I mean, it makes sense. 📚 Sign: True blue Aquarius ♒ 📚 Enneagram: FOUR, like so hard a four. 📚 Secret hobby: I have this awesome yet terrible habit of making all of my hobbies into my work, and I'm grateful for that! But I do have one secret hobby that I've never put out into the public before... And that is miniatures and doll-making! I'm obsessed with miniatures and creating tiny frozen worlds 🤷♀️ 📚 Current goal: Finish next poetry installment + book on writing and editing! Trying to keep track of everything going on in your brain and on the page can be super frustrating, especially when your ideas are always changing, your characters are always evolving, and your plot veers in directions you didn't even plan for. 📚 Everytime I write a book, the process is different. I have spread printed pages out, I have taped timelines to walls, I have stuck strictly to computer docs, I have assigned journals, I have drawn worlds on poster boards, and I have a maybe-bad habit of randomly taking notes on receipts, slips of torn paper, on my recorder, and in my phone, so, basically my house often looks like a scene from Memento 😂 Every book finds life differently! 📚 What methods are you using to keep track of your work? What's the toughest part of the process? . . . . . #writerscommunity #writingcommunity #wrinspo #writerslife #writersofig #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #novel #novelsofinstagram #novelist #manuscript #novelwriting #nanowrimo #getorganized #writing #amwriting #editing #amediting #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofig #publishing #tellyourstory
Have you always wanted to be a writer, or have you always known you are one? 📚 I never "wanted" to be a writer. I just instinctively identified as one, even as a little girl. I was so fascinated by books and stories, caressing the pages, tempering my pace to savor stories, traveling to and living in other worlds. It wasn't until I got close to adulthood that I understood what it meant to "want" to be a writer. Everyone, literally everyone (even professors ), told me that it would be a hard road, that I couldn't make a living that way, that being a full-time writer is basically a pipe dream. And I sort of believed them. 📚 When my grandma died, she left most of her things to me, and one of those things was this sixties-era Royal typewriter. She had also written a book (with the help of my grandfather's transcription-she was blind ) that chronicled our family's story all the way back to its inception--to when we were shepherds in the Italian countryside. Pieces of her prose sounded so familiar to me, like I'd written it myself, and I used to daydream about her typing the words. My uncle, with great ingenuity, created a publishing press through which they produced and printed a limited release of the book. Together, they enacted a dream from nothing, and created a beautiful memoir for our family to treasure. Writing and publishing is in my blood. 📚 With that knowledge, I knew being a writer wasn't an option but my purpose, and I've proven all those naysayers so, so, so wrong. Full-time writers exist. We are real. And you can come join us anytime! All of this is also to say: don't let anyone tell you what you can't do. There is always space in the world for your authentic gifts. And you deserve to live the life you're imagining. . . . . . #tellyourstory #makemagic #typewriters #royaltypewriter #memoir #literary #storytelling #writerscommunity #writersofig #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #authorsofig #authorsofinstagram #authorsofinsta #writers_den_ #writeyourlife #write #writes #literary_imagery #typewritersofinstagram #editor #bookcoach #bookstagram

Today's bookstore haul. I'm so ready for fall, you guys, so I had to stock up on some new fantasy 🔮🧹🧙🖤 I basically took the month of August off from social media, but it was because I've been really working hard on some new things! All new content, product launches, and book news coming atcha starting September 1st! Happy fall, friends! 🍁🍂🎃
It's National Dog Day. This is my soulmate ❤️
It's been a weird week. Frank had a sort of scary eye surgery, big trees in our backyard fell down, I've been trying to carve out time for my own creativity, but all the while, I've been editing some really incredible books that keep me feeling inspired and whimsical amidst some of the heaviness floating around me. 📚 I'm continually floored by the talent in my inbox. And I can't wait to see which new writers, voices, and books pop up for me this fall--who I'll get to collaborate with and weave words with on the looms of pages. If you have a story scratching inside of you, reach out to me. 📚 And if you needed to hear it today, you are brilliant.
I was just going about my day, working, writing, laying out a book, when I opened my browser and was hit with the news that Toni Morrison has passed. I know posting on social media about people you didn't even know and about their impact on you is cliche and predictable and whatever. That's fine. This one is different. 🖤 I won't take you through her catalogue and how each book affected me, but I want to tell you about the time I got to see Toni Morrison read, live on stage. 🖤 It was in a big Chicago theater--a college friend kindly asked me to go--and they'd set up a chair and a table and a blanket on that chair for Morrison. When she strode onto the stage, it was with a resolve and fortitude, with a lifetime of wisdom, heavy in her body but light in her step. She was regal and soft spoken, but CONCISE in her tone and her language and careful with every single syllable. She read to us from her novel, from her chair, covered in an afghan, looking over us as we leaned into her brilliance. Seeing this icon--a woman who'd taught me so much through her books, sit so close to me, and read aloud from those same books, searing the narration of her voice, of it's unique timbre, into my memory, was a breathtaking and surreal opportunity that I often go back to in my mind. 🖤 As a child, Morrison helped me understand the ways in which my life was different and privileged, and about the perspective of my young sisters--about how they were being pressed down under the thumb of my fathers, and her words changed me--sparked in me a new knowledge and an important resistance. I love Morrison for that. Society owes a collective debt to her for baring her experience to us all, for gifting us with beautiful literature, for embodying her truest self in her art so that we can strive to do the same. It's a sad morning, but it's also a morning for celebration in the light of a great American author's life. 🖤 RIP.
Only ONE spot left in August, y'all! 📚 As I wrap up my summer projects and get ready to head into the fall, I'm reflecting on my own body of work while really working to envision and act on what's to come. I realized that every time I have a new book coming out or an event coming up that I get scared I won't have any more good ideas afterwards, and I freeze up. I stall a bit. Yet, every time I finish one thing, the next idea always comes. Our artistry is always growing and evolving and re-shaping itself. All we need to do is stay out of its way. 📚 #writingcommunity #writersofig #writersofinstagram #writingtools #storytelling #authorsofig #mentorship #authormentor #editorslife #writerslife #writingsession #writingworkshop #authorboss #womaninbusiness #authorpreneur #author #authorssupportingauthors #publish

The world tells writers and creatives that we can't make a living off our art--that we need a "backup plan"--and nothing could be further from the truth.
