YesterdayFAQ: What is the shelf life for @backcountry_foodie ultralight backpacking recipes? Answer: 6-12 months. . Generally speaking, the shelf life of our recipes is significantly shorter when compared to commercially prepared freeze-dried meals. Our recipes are designed to be eaten, not stored. 😋 . Why is this? In order for our recipes to be as light and low volume as possible, the fat content is typically higher than traditional backpacking meals. This also shortens the shelf life as fat goes rancid rather quickly unlike dehydrated/freeze-dried fruit and vegetables. . How can you prolong the shelf life of our recipes? Beyond the usual, store in a cool, dark, dry place and vacuum seal… . Use fresh ingredients – avoid nuts sold in bulk bins and old oils. . Coarsely chop nuts instead of grinding them – increased surface area of nuts reduces the shelf life. . Add parmesan cheese at the time the meal is consumed. . Leave oil, butter and coconut milk out of freshly prepared and dehydrated meals. Add oil, ghee, or coconut milk powder when the meal is consumed. . These are just a few tips that will prolong the life of ultralight backpacking meals especially if you’re preparing for an entire season or thru-hike. Having a new business I don't think I can take a whole month away (and I don't think my hubby would be happy with the 3 dogs that long on his own ) but my goal is to knock out this beast in 2020. It's been a dream of mine since I moved to Colorado in 2004. Section hiking commences January!! 3 days agoYou dont need anything crazy to go an adventure. Life is what you make it. We did get a new adventure mobile and are currently decking it out but here is old trusty dusty. This is Isak Heartstone, a wooden troll sculpture made out of recycled materials by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo. He is pretty easy to find if you know he’s there but we took the more scenic route when going to see him. Breckenridge in the summer is still one of my all time favorites @jeneswim
