4 days ago"December Mornings in the Mountains" We headed up Alum Cave Trail yesterday at Daybreak. After 2 miles up the mountain we reached Inspiration Point at an elevation of 4700 feet. The National Park Service's original plan was to tear down the existing structures in the park and restore it to a completely natural state. I love these old homesteads and the glimpses they provide of a way of life that is all but forgotten. I, for one, am very glad the Park Service has preserved them! I’m pretty sure the reason I like it so much is because of the fabulous dress I’m wearing from @lightheart_gear and how happy I am when I’m hiking in it. When people ask why I love their hiking dresses so much, I usually laugh and tell them, “Because if you’re gonna stink on a hike, you might as well look and feel pretty.” But the real reason I love them is because of their simple yet thoughtful and completely functional design. 2 weeks agoAfter, we visited the #littlegreenbrierschool we continued onward to visit the Walker Sisters’ Cabin. What a beautiful piece of history honoring five amazing, resilient, self preserving women. They continued to live in their cabin after the surrounding area became a national park. They welcomed hikers and sold several handmade items until they simply could not handle it anymore. Violet and I have been studying President Theodore Roosevelt and his progressive acts in history so we had some great conversations connecting our hike to history. A talking point we had during our hike was “do you think all those forced from their life long home would feel it was worth it if they could see the beauty and preservation that it has accomplished?” We were also able to enjoy the serene calls of an owl as we were leaving the cabin and Cole found a crawdad in the little stream that runs along side the trail (see video. ) #walkersisterscabin #optoutside #familyhike #appalachianhistory #hikethesmokies #smokeymountains #smokeymountainsnationalpark #hike #historicalhike
