Repost from @publiclandshateyou • In writing the article mentioned in the last post, I spent some time delving into the Leave No Trace Center (LNTC ). The LNTC has a fascinating history and owes much of it’s original programing to the federal land management agencies. In fact, LNTC still operates under a memorandum of understanding with those agencies. However, in recent years it seems that LNTC has made a hard pivot from its original message of respecting public lands to focusing more on protecting its lucrative corporate sponsorships. My article “Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics – For Public Lands or For Profit?” takes a deep dive into all that & more (link in bio ). It investigates how 10 of its 13 Board of Directors have ties to outdoor recreation-based corporations including @REI , @keen , @Cricket , & more. It reveals that LNTC has actually put a copyright on the #LeaveNoTrace Principles and charges underfunded land management agencies $1,000 per year to use them, despite having a “Leave No Trace In Every Park” initiative. It shows how one of the LNTC’s most referenced resources is almost 20 years old & four pages long, yet their “Branding Guidelines” is a 23-page document. It looks at how Dana Watts, who made $156,104 in 2018 as the executive director of the LNTC, is partially compensated not on the LNTC’s positive impacts to public lands, but the net earnings of the organization. It also exposes how the LNTC has even started sending supportive messages to influencers who are caught, & subsequently called out for, illegal behavior on YOUR public lands. I’m not one to complain about a problem without offering up solutions, so the conclusion of the article offers up a number of solutions that I believe can help get LNTC back on the course that was originally set for it by NOLS & your federal land management agencies. I have no doubt that the LNTC was started with the best of intentions, and that to this day there are people at the LNTC that do great work educating people. #leavenotrace #publiclandshateyou #getbacktobasics #calloutpost #stayontrail #followtherules #readpostedsigns
I would like to share this resource in view of the recent controversy within the dog community. — These books are fabulous and are available in many areas (check Amazon ). I also had the Boston book. I’m very sad that I am not finding one for Minnesota or Wisconsin. — In addition to the information shown on the following slides, the books give you tips on things like what to expect certain times of the year and commentary about the trail(s ). — Enjoy your dog! Happy hiking! — **Please do check that rules have not changed since publication.
"With outdoor recreation surging, it’s no surprise that we’re in this pickle. The Forest Service reports that in 2016, some five million more visitors hit the 193 million acres of public land it manages compared with a decade earlier. The fastest-growing residential areas in the country are in so-called wildland-urban-interface zones, where locals have easy access to adventure. Outdoor tourism in places like Colorado’s Front Range is spiking as people seek out whitewater rivers and alpine peaks. Meanwhile, some SAR leaders report changes in the kinds of rescues they’re doing: there are more Instagramming adventurers getting in over their heads, more mushroom hunters in flip-flops losing their way in the woods, and more people navigating with their phones until the battery dies." Remember to respect the outdoors. This means not to litter or disobey local laws AND not to willfully put yourself in danger wherein you require the help of SAR or an airlift. No photo or selfie is worth your life or the lives of SAR you put in danger when they come to rescue you. #stewardsoftheland #LoveYourPublicLands #publiclands #publiclandshateyou #natureisdisappointedinyou

Read the entire sign 🐕 And yes, do not feed wildlife, do not approach them, do not harm them. When in nature, keep your pets on a leash and close by to minimize wildlife interactions. If you think it's harmless, it is definitely not. You put yourself and wildlife in danger. The more wildlife are domesticated and dependent on humans, the more they lose their natural instinct. 🚫🚫🚫JUST DON'T DO IT🚫🚫🚫 #keepwildlifewild #leavenotrace #stewardsoftheland #LoveYourPublicLands #publiclands #publiclandshateyou #natureisdisappointedinyou

This post won't make you like me more. This is your warning. Social media is odd. It's easy to compare yourself to other people, in fact you can argue that it's the main reason it exists. Removing the likes from pages helps eliminate that to some degree (props to you @instagram ) but the fact remains- how does your voice matter then accounts with thousands of followers can create a narrative that overshadows your own. Should we live in constant fear that we are at any moment going to be *cancelled* ? Obviously not. But you have a choice to be on social media. Want to take your dog off leash in an area that is for on leash only or even forbids dogs? Don't post it online. Today's PLHY vs Instagram Dog Moms has been a good lesson on challenging personal bias for myself. I took my dogs off leash for pictures here. They went back on leash, but then a mile or two later into the hike I took them off officially. Should I keep my dogs on leash more? Yes. Do my dogs have better then average training, recall and are always wearing an ecollar. Also yes. But it doesn't matter really. The reasons why won't matter if you want to be annoyed by it because that's another thing with social media. Once you make up your mind hearing the reasons behind an action won't change it. I give a shit about LNT. I give a shit how our planet is treated and when people abuse our public lands. I also care that people like my voice and listen to me. Part of me struggles between wanting to grow and have more of a voice and enjoying the freedom and anonymity that comes with being a small account. I for sure wouldn't want to be subjected to keyboard warriors because my dogs were off leash on a trail that is- literally at times, ankle deep in Bison and Long Horn shit. But I do. And I don't always post about it online because it's fucking easier to avoid the trolls if you don't feed them. And my *brand* if I even have one - of being honest and "real" may be effected by admitting that I purposefully don't post about bad actions but that is the truth. It's not sexy, or cool or easy to swallow. But luckily my income isn't tied to this account and never will be bc I would truly suck as an influencer.

We understand: people want to leave a mark. They want to say: "I was here, I existed, I was born on this planet and I loved, I traveled, I struggled and fundamentally, I lived.”. People like M. Larson who signed his name in 1888, or Ellis Pritchett in 1912 (signed twice ), John Rich in 1893 and all those who’s names you see on this rock - they wanted to be remembered, forgetting one minor detail: HOW they would be remembered. We understand the sentiment behind this, but destruction is destruction. This majestic wall in the Capitol Reef National Park will never be restored to its pristine form, and we can all see exactly who is to blame. We live in a time when leaving a legacy is possible without destroying the beauty in nature. Write your history in books and blogs. Paint it or sing it or make videos of it for your followers. Write it with your actions, but don’t vandalize it into wild stone or wood. Don’t bring your tagging markers or paint cans into a place they are not welcome. That’s not art, that’s what a-holes do. #fortheloveofbackcountry . . . . . . . . #backsidecountry #backcountry #utah #capitolreef #capitolreefnps #utah #thegiftofparks #findyourpark #utahgram #instautah #ihutah #iloveutah #mountainlife #wowutah #rockymountains #youtah #utahunique #adventureculture #optoutside #hiking #hikeutah #utahisrad #utahrocks #visitutah #exploreutah #utahillustrated #utahstoke #publiclandshateyou #publiclands

Related to my last post: One of the things that really irks the shit out of me is seeing people carelessly disrespecting our public lands, causing damage and destruction to fragile areas, and also helping create dangerous situations. These asshats, who were part of a paid bus tour group, walked right under and past a sign that stated clearly this area above rainbow falls was closed/off limits. They walked right out to an area above the falls, walked out on wet rocks to take selfies, and then walked back through the brush a different way (creating another worn path that was off the blazed trail ). I approached the tour guide (who was probably mostly to blame ) shortly afterward and tried to reason with her that what she was doing was not following the rules of the park, she and her group (probably bringing multiple groups a week here ) were damaging the area, and she was encouraging others to also follow in her path; she didn't even want to hear about the inherent danger she was putting her group in by walking them out on wet rocks above a high, powerful waterfall. She just tried to shout over me and refused to listen to my words saying that I was not a ranger or officer and I have no authority to tell her how to run her tour. Tried to personally insult me and deny she was in the wrong. I merely finished by saying she should be ashamed of treating the land in this disrespectful way and just walked away. She wasn't going to listen and I wasn't going to continue to argue, but I truly feel we need more people speaking out against these kind of people. When you see something like this happening in person, (if it's safe to, please ) say something. When you see something like this posted online, call it out. Pages like @publiclandshateyou and @insta_wrecked are doing their part by calling out apathetic 'influencers' but more people need to put in the effort to do so as well. They have encouraged me and others to speak up and speak out to defend our public lands from people who either ignorantly or purposefully exploit and/or damage our public spaces at the detriment to everyone else. . . . . . . . . . . . #rainbowfalls #hilo #hawaii #publiclandshateyou #instawrecked
Seeing this page, and the attention it's getting, makes me think that I should start one too called "THE TRAIL HATES YOU" then repost everytime I see someone eating junk food and complaining about how hard hiking the trail is. #hikerhunger ? #embracethebrutality ? #nevergonnamakeit ? Well guess what? It's not the trail's fault, it's your nutrition's, or lack thereof. Solution? #lesscaloriesmorenutrients While the culture on trail is to eat whatever you want (and feel like crap because of it ), I see hiking trails as an opportunity to invest in your health. What's causing all of this pain then, if it's not the trail? Nutritional deficiencies, excessive amounts of toxins, chemical imbalances, inflammation, mobile nutrient displacement, allergies, gastrointestinal issues, and skin disorders just to name a few of the obvious. Bottom line? If I don't stick up for the trail, then who will? If I don't put an end to this blaming of one's pain on the trail, then who will? If I don't expose the real culprit that's causing an overwhelming use of ibuprofen (so much so, that hikers call it vitamin i ) on our nation's long-distance trails, then who will? So much more could be said about this. “Emergence” This tree resides in one of my favorite slot canyon corridors along a wash that I visit each year during peak autumn color. It’s amazing how each year you can revisit the same area and manage to find new details, scenes, and compositions each time. Each year, the conditions are a little bit different. My earlier image, “Thrive,” is just adjacent to this tree, and I have another image from the exact same tree that looks completely different. I love all the diversity and constant change in nature! It provides an infinite source of inspiration, and so long as we continue the fight to preserve and protect it from those who would seek to pillage it for private profit, it can continue to do so for generations to come. #landscapephotography #utahgram #neverstopexploring #utahdotcom #werutah #goatworthy #optoutside #leaveitbetter #wildernessculture #igsouthwest #utahisrad #findyourpark #utah #nationalparks #usinterior #jaw_dropping_shots #worldtravelscapes #pictureline #westbysouthwest #zion #zionnarrows #zionnationalpark #publiclandshateyou #zionutah #leavenotrace

“Revitalization” The reflected light in this scene really caught my attention, and the way the leaves in this spot were still largely green with some yellow mixed in made for a great combination with the blues from the sky reflected in the water as well. I liked the way the greens and blues seemed to convey the idea of the water carrying life energy forward and out into the world from within the deep, dark depths of the Narrows. This is a section of water near Temple Sinawava just below the exit of the Narrows. #landscapephotography #utahgram #neverstopexploring #utahdotcom #werutah #optoutside #leaveitbetter #wildernessculture #igsouthwest #utahisrad #findyourpark #utah #nationalparks #usinterior #jaw_dropping_shots #worldtravelscapes #pictureline #westbysouthwest #zion #zionnarrows #zionnationalpark #publiclandshateyou #zionutah #leavenotrace #thenarrows #waterabstract
“Vida” One of the things that I love seeing in the desert is the many different ways life finds to thrive in places where it seems incredibly unlikely to do so. This little tree had managed to establish roots and find water in a crack in the wall of a slot canyon, about ten feet up on the wall. Adorned in peak autumn color, it seemed to be boasting of its admirable little accomplishment, and I was happy to make its portrait in honor of the feat. #landscapephotography #utahgram #neverstopexploring #utahdotcom #werutah #optoutside #leaveitbetter #wildernessculture #igsouthwest #utahisrad #findyourpark #utah #nationalparks #usinterior #jaw_dropping_shots #worldtravelscapes #pictureline #westbysouthwest #zion #zionnarrows #zionnationalpark #publiclandshateyou #zionutah #leavenotrace

Today I checked off one of my nerdy career goals and listened to my voice broadcasting over an NPR station talking about outdoor advocacy! You can head to the link in my bio to listen to the segment on wildflowers and geotagging (alongside @publiclandshateyou ). The interview was quick, and there’s so much more I wanted to say, specifically about the ways we choose to educate (or shame ) + building outdoor community. So, here we go. What I so deeply wish I had time to ask “Steve” the anonymous person behind the PLHY account is: What is your long-term plan for building empathetic relationships and a strong stewardship community? The numero uno reason I believe so deeply in this platform is because we are a community, a little familia, a collective of (soon-to-be ) friends. We dig into tough topics, can be direct when someone is in the wrong, and we are open to changing our perspectives + learning–because we trust each other. You *know* me. I try my hardest to respond to all your messages and questions. I learn from y’all just as much as you learn from me. We are vulnerable together, because in a tiny digital way, we know each other. And every time we call each other out, we call each other in, too. Educating and spreading stewardship will be a lifelong practice of building relationships, exercising compassion + empathy, and being willing to be vulnerable. When I look at the @publiclandshateyou community, I see anger, judgement, a lack of intention to build + empower each other. “Steve” seemed genuine in his intent to harness the unexpected power of his platform, and I hope he does. So many fired up outdoorists ought to be empowered to do good, and Steve has a big opportunity to shift the way his community approaches education and call-outs. You won’t change someone’s mind by calling them names, raising digital pitchforks, and shaming them behind an anonymous identity or just appearing in someone’s comments without any sort of ‘hello!’ You have to build relationships. You have to exercise empathy. You have to be in it for the long haul of building and shifting community, not just the short term call out culture. So, who’s with me, in it for the long haul?
Today’s post was going to be about pooping in the desert—but today we’re going to talk about activism and community instead. Activism is: addressing problems when you see ‘em and providing solutions, spreading awareness and education, being bold and brave in the face of wrongdoing, sticking up for what you believe in, taking accountability for yourself and holding your community to those same standards. Activism isn’t: dragging people on the internet, insulting someone, making threatening comments, calling someone names, being hateful, gossiping. My friends, once you engage in that kind of behavior, you are no longer an activist. In fact, you become a detriment and a distraction from your cause. You contribute to the harm, instead of the good. I have been pondering the @publiclandshateyou account for many months. “Steve” provides some poignant education, and despite some red flags, I continued to hope he would use his platform for good. I was concerned about his anonymity, which prevents him from building relationships with the people whom he hopes to educate and allows him to shirk responsibility for his platform and his community—and my concerns have tipped after watching the way people flocked to attack a human (whom I love ) in his most recent post. If you follow the PLHY account, I encourage you to unfollow. If you have left a riled up comment on one of his posts, I invite you to reread it and consider your intentions. Steve has weaponized @leavenotracecenter and is using it as an excuse to allow people to harass, threaten, gossip, and bully. There is simply no excuse for that kind of behavior in the outdoor activism space. Period. Hard stop. Call wrongdoings out, always. You don’t have to sugarcoat it, but you DO have to draw a hardline between accountability and cheap, harmful behavior. I hope and am committed to fostering a community of activists who never resort to crossing that line. I am so disappointed in the PLHY community right now. We’re better than that. Until next time friends, if you 💩 in the desert, don’t bury it—pack it out. And if you have the urge to take a verbal shit on someone else on the internet, be a decent human being instead.
Only you can pack it out, KOOK! 🐻 A design to remind kooks to take care of our public lands and pick up your shit. Coming soon to the website 🤙🏽

I’m sure I’ll be minority within the cycling community when I say that I strongly oppose David Bernhardt’s secretarial Order 3376 that requires the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation to allow e-bikes on any trail where other classes of bicycles are allowed. This is nothing more than an attempt to undermine and weaken the rules and regulations that help keep our public lands so great for diverse user groups. I really wish the cycling industry would at the very least acknowledge the potential harm of this order. Am I against E-bikes? No. I simply want them to be barred from trails that are already designated as non-motorized. I mean the things do have fucking motors. What’s next? Motorcycles on “non motorized” trails? ATVs? Bikes in wilderness? E-Bikes in wilderness? Motorcycles in wilderness? I seriously think that this order sets a very dangerous precedent. . . . #ebikerant #ebike #publiclands #keepitpublic #publiclandowner #mountainbiking #mtb #ebikesaremopeds #ourwild #growaspine #publiclandshateyou #humanpiweredadventures
