NGC 7822. ===================================== This was a rough one. A night of errors but a night of lessons also. From high winds to disengaged gears, this one really put me through my paces! The end result is still one I’m willing to post though. It’s not perfect but I salvaged something from what could be a disaster. In other news, my new ASI1600MM and narrowband filters are on their way from @optcorp . Bringing narrowband imaging to one of the heaviest light polluted cities in the world. I must be effing crazy! Please take a few minutes to check out some really amazing astrophotographers that I’ve tagged in the image. And for all my NYC loving peeps, I will be back to posting what you love really soon.

Regardless of which country and civilization, when standing under a sea of stars, next to one of these majestic cultural heritages, I feel the same unique sense, a connection to the past and future at the same time. Another take from the recent Guatemala project. The ancient Maya city of Tikal is home to many limestone pyramids that tower up to 70 meters (230 ft ) high. And this is just the tip of a hidden iceberg, located 70 km (42 mi ) north of here, with no access road. It is called El Mirador and keeps many archaeologists busy. Unfortunately its threatened by massive deforestation and looting. Swipe for a closer view of constellation Cygnus, the Swan, with the North America Nebula sitting next to bright star Deneb (visible these nights over the west ). I’m on a @natgeo assignment to document the impact of artificial lights and the value of natural nights for human and other species. Appears here is the beautiful Griffith Observatory, home to one of the world’s finest planetariums. But beyond that what you see is the grey star-free sky caused by light pollution. While we need light for urban life, in many cases our environment is overlit and intense bright lights do not help with safety but create very dark shadows and also glares, causing accidents. Light pollution also affects Wildlife, Health, Energy, and Heritage … #saveournightsky #twanight #lightpollution #losangeles @twanight @natgeoimagecollection . . . . tag us for publish your photos: @panartphotos #photo #photography #photographer #frame #photos #pictureoftheday #picture #best_photo #digital_photography #camera #portraits #portrait

Using the EOS Ra with the 50mm f1.2 RF lens I set up for a timelapse sequence with the iconic Church of Good Shepard in the foreground. Looking toward the south, in the sky the Southern Cross and Coalsack dark nebula are on the right and Carina Nebula sits above the church, a massive hydrogen cloud in the Galaxy where newborn stars are forming, some 8500 light years away. Compared to a regular camera, the modified IR-cut filter of EOS Ra makes it 4 times more sensitive to these common red glowing nebulae in the sky, by passing more of the red end of the light spectrum to the sensor. #astrophotography #nightscape #laketekapo #saveournightsky #canon

Schaut mal hin! This impressive Maya temple in Tikal World Heritage in Guatemala is called the Great Jaguar, and you can hear the big cat if you spend enough time in this jungle at night. Protected by the national park they freely roam around the temples at night when all tourists leave the site. Two weeks ago when we had a special permission to document the site at night, the tropical sky cleared after thunderstorms. Taurus, the Bull, and Pleiades star cluster (the Seven Sisters ) were rising above the 47-meter (154 ft ) pyramid, from 750 AD. There are old stories and new studies on importance of Pleiades to Mayan astronomers (swipe for a closer view ). One myth is people of Tikal believed they came from Pleiades and the seven important pyramids of the Grand Plaza in Tikal represent the pattern of Pleiades. There is no doubt that some Maya pyramids were built to reflect astronomical events and perhaps from atop Tikal’s pyramids, the ancient astronomers tracked the movements of celestial objects, keeping time for their ritual and agriculture calendar. The Maya calendar was one of the most advanced of the ancient world, thanks to astronomical observations. To them the conjunction of Pleiades with the sun (when it totally disappears for a while ) was a marking, also the first rise in the morning sky (May-June ) when the tropical rains come, and when Pleiades rises at sunset and visible the entire night in November. That’s when the dry season and harvesting begins. Tikal is one of the largest sites of Maya civilization and at its peak was home to at least 60,000 Maya. #tikalnationalpark #saveournightsky #guatemala #maya #worldheritage @natgeoimagecollection @twanight
Video by Babak Tafreshi @babaktafreshi | Audio-on for the sound of loons (diver bird ), recorded during this 20-second exposure over a peaceful lake in Maine on a night unspoiled by light pollution. My family recently stayed in this renovated boathouse, enveloped by ambient night sounds. In city life we are disconnected from these natural elements. Our excessive light pollution not only vanishes the stars, it can immensely disturb wildlife. The natural night environment is far more sensitive to light than general public knows. A single intense LED light, left on unnecessarily in a vacation home, can disturb birds, insects, and the entire view. Closeup view of a celestial meeting. The two brightest planets in the Earth sky were in conjunction in late November. Venus and Jupiter are seen in this evening next to the Lagoon Nebula, some 4100 light years away in the Galaxy (swipe for a closer look ). Vivid colors of dusk in this tropical country were still visible to the camera before the pair disappear behind towering cumulus clouds. #astrophotography #venus #jupiter #guatemala #saveournightsky @natgeoimagecollection @twanight
Audio on for the sound of loons (diver bird ) recorded during this 20-second exposure, last week on a peaceful lake in Maine, a natural night unspoiled by light pollution that not only vanishes the stars, can immensely disturb wildlife. My family stayed in this renovated boathouse embraced by ambient night sounds, which we are totally disconnected from in city life. I was there for the annual Maine stargazing program AstronomyRetreat.com at @medomakcamp where I give a talk and a workshop. Email me (under my profile ) if you are interested to join the 2020 program. #saveournightsky #stargazing #loons #newengland @twanight @natgeoimagecollection
Impressive evening from a high altitude vista to Lake Atitlan, a deep caldera surrounded by Maya communities and volcanoes in Guatemala. The diffuse band of light near the middle is Zodiacal Light, the reflecting sunlight from asteroid dust in the Solar System, only visible far from large cities. Where the last colors of twilight merged with the setting Milky Way, right on top of the clouds, bright planets Venus and Jupiter are in conjunction. Swipe for a closer look. #saveournightsky #lakeatitlan #guatemala #volcano #zodiacallight @natgeoimagecollection @twanight
Video by Babak Tafreshi @babaktafreshi | With the end of summer, darker nights return to the Arctic latitudes. Here the Big Dipper stands high in the Iceland sky. The unusual light is known as a pulsating aurora. Although it’s faster in this time-lapse video, even in real time they shift and brighten in patches every second, rather than the typical arcs and streaks. Auroras are caused by energetic electrons speeding down into Earth’s atmosphere and colliding with the thin air on the boundary of space and our atmosphere. Down on Earth is the iconic Skógafoss waterfall. Explore more of the World at Night photography with @babaktafreshi . The soundtrack is "Red North" by Ali Raini, Tonelabs. #saveournightsky #astrophotography #aurora #spaceweather
