With Anishinaabekwe activist @sarainfox on the WARPONY we spray painted together for @thanksgiving .film — 📸 @jamiecskr . Crewing on 6 films in 2.5 months in the NYU Grad Film program has been all types of crazy but one of my favorite moments was spray painting with @sarainfox on the picture vehicle for @shane .mcsauby’s film @thanksgiving .film : which I was happy to serve as a producer on. We wrapped @littlesky .film and we wrapped @thanksgiving .film , and now I’m on a lay over in Hong Kong on my way to support my best friend @hanyumeng3 ’s poetic detective love story to both a girl and a childhood city.

If I’ve been quiet on the Internet it’s because I just wrapped @littlesky .film , my NYU 2nd year musical short drama, DP: @zamarinwahdat — starring @theillustriouspearl @jinjabrew @fenton_li @yiqingzhao1222 @andbruluk : 6 months in the making, a queer Asian immigrant story a lifetime in the writing. More behind the scenes stills coming soon 🙏 today I just want to say, a couple years ago I didn’t think I’d be able to heal my childhood trauma and live with the strength to tell the story but here I am, we did it, with a 7 person ensemble cast, a 25 person crew, with some of the most generous people I’ve ever met. Thank you cast & crew & music team for believing in me. I was never a director until the day you all made the space for me to be one. The diligence and attention to detail and heart to bring a musical story like this to life is beyond anything I’ve ever done or imagined was possible. My life is forever changed from this experience & we have been crafting a new way to tell stories: through community & chosen family with a prayer to a future where we can all be free. 🐋The Ocean Calls, a kids book I illustrated for @kokilabooks @penguinkids written by @tinamcho celebrating the haenyeo—Korean deepsea diving grandmas passing their tradition on to the next generation is now out for pre-order: bit.ly/theoceancalls — half a year in the making, done with extensive research, this book would not be possible without the eye of art director @jazymberto , the tireless help of @yuanzheng .yz (who helped with character design ) and @zo .ing and @devarius who helped with coloring and @wendilulugu who was my supportive agent. “Dayeon wants to be a haenyeo just like Grandma. The haenyeo dive off the coast of Jeju Island to pluck treasures from the sea–generations of Korean women have done so for centuries. To Dayeon, the haenyeo are as strong and graceful as mermaids. To give her strength, Dayeon eats Grandma’s abalone porridge. She practices holding her breath while they do the dishes. And when Grandma suits up for her next dive, Dayeon grabs her suit, flippers, and goggles. A scary memory of the sea keeps Dayeon clinging to the shore, but with Grandma’s guidance, Dayeon comes to appreciate the ocean’s many gifts.” ✨

A film by @esha_4rd that I served as cinematographer on just won an honorable mention at @urbanworldfilmfest . 🎬 Esha is a very gifted and thoughtful filmmaker in my program, congratulations to her for winning an honorable mention for best narrative short. “Determined, 9 year-old Taylor buys a fish in order to practice how to swim for her “Big Day.” Her mother, Janel, has different plans and forces her to go underwater earlier then what Taylor expected. Unprepared, Taylor attempts to stop her mother but is ultimately forced to dive deep into water, resulting in Taylor learning how to cope and survive.” Poster & lettering by me.
Two years ago I wrote/directed my first narrative film since undergrad. Next week I’m about to direct another one and it’s bigger, queer and asian and full of live original music, original drag costumes, night shoots, memory, child actors, 7 person asian ensemble cast, time travel, 60 extras, with a dream team that I am truly grateful for. Visit link in my profile if you wanna sign up to be in the live music drag audience. 🎥🎬 #tbt behind the scenes stills from Motherland, my MOS starring @layqanunayawar & fam, shot by Jason Begue and @mad .mel_ producer @raawwwwrrrrrrrrr AD @matheovincze and AC @chloewallace_ PD @maigra .spora @wcassidy
It’s gonna be ok 🤗
Im still looking for drag audience extras for my movie! Sign up via link in profile and meet the incredible team behind Little Sky 📽 Two weeks from shooting, trying to stay calm 👽 #tbt when I had the time to be a little alien at the ocean 🌊 I remember the day I thought It would be impossible to be a director of queer Asian diasporic stories and then I got up and started directing 🐍 photo by @frisly
Sometimes i feel more majestic than I really am🙏. Thank you @kingtexas for capturing a moment where I feel most free. Holding all the storm until I find the calm in the middle of preproduction.
Im a producer on @shane .mcsauby’s next film and we need your help. 🎥SWIPE RIGHT & SHARE our casting call for Native Actors. The film, Happy Thanksgiving is a dark comedy/thriller about an Anishinaabe man who takes a “Happy Thanksgiving” wish from a bank teller so personally that he carried out this bizarre revenge plan. We are shooting in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the end of November and we need help in finding a bank to be in this film, a house with a dining room that can be a Native Grandma’s house, a grocery store, and we are casting nationally for a Native Grandma, a young Afroindigenous woman, and the lead, a Native man. Trans and non-binary inclusive. A independent short film like this is not possible without support from our communities, so in a few weeks we will be opening an online print store with work by me and @wiisaakodewinini and @justseeds artists to support this film and collecting all kinds of donations. Your support will go a long way. The first poster is from @shane .mcsauby ‘s film, Nimkii ⚡️ a short about an indigenous girl who discovers she has super powers which is playing at @imaginenative . I designed the poster ✌️ it inspires me so much to witness and collaborate on Shanes visionary stories. For me, as a non-Native ally it is important to support emerging native filmmakers and artists if I am to be an immigrant on stolen indigenous land (Lenapehoking ). Building a community of support ensures that emerging filmmakers can have a life long career which ultimately helps diversify and strengthen the landscape of native stories being told on Turtle Island & I think that makes our world better. Email thanksgiving.movie @gmail .com if you are a native actor interested in auditioning or if you can help us with any of the above.
🎥✨In one month I will be directing my film, Little Sky, with the chosen family and community that raised me, after my parents rejected me, for being an artist, for being pansexual, for being the only gender that I know how to be; my own. I am as ready as I’ll ever be to tell the truth that continues to haunt me. To stand in the miracle of my life & everything that I have survived & direct an ensemble of chinese-american actors to embody that truth. To hopefully make a film worthy of the love my mother & chosen family gave to me. This is a photo of me from a long time ago. For as long as I can remember I have always felt in between boy and girl. In the violence of my parents divorce & immigration, the six year old girl in me died. In the mourning of that girl, I rose twenty years later like a phoenix from ash, imagining a new gender all my own. I wish that gender could be the skin of a planet so green and alive, it renders rejection and violence history. But all it can be: is a total acceptance of all that I’ve walked through. Like this planet, I was borne from chaos and fire, before the formation of the first ocean. Tonight I give in to my own tumultuous current. Tonight I see the night sky reflected in my own blood. The stars will guide me when I rise to the directors seat in a month and hopefully, hopefully do my own story justice. I want to acknowledge this remarkable producing team for holding me down, through breakdowns, and doubt and stress and laughter: @andreas .nicholas @eris_the_wanderer @raawwwwrrrrrrrrr @toneontop @hanyumeng3 @frisly and lead @theillustriouspearl for your incredible heart and talent of embodiment, and my DP for @zamarinwahdat for bringing light & shadow to this story. There is no need to shine when you all shine so bright. 🎥

NYC CASTING CALL for LITTLE SKY 🎥✨ my 2nd year film in the NYU grad program—a community driven queer Asian narrative short. Join our creative family, lead by a team of mostly women and queer/non-binary folks of color. Logline: 15 years after their parents divorce, SKY (played by @theillustriouspearl ) a non-binary chinese drag queen and popstar returns to the city they were raised in and confronts their estranged immigrant father in an encounter that will alter the borders that once divided them. I am so grateful for our music team: original songs by Teng Yang and @jinjabrew (also a supporting star ), produced by @ohyungli , with vocal coaching by the inimitable @ariellejacobs . We are casting a Chinese mandarin-speaking Dad and 3 young Chinese boys, one is a lead who can sing. This project is held together by the amazing producing team: @andreas .nicholas @raawwwwrrrrrrrrr @eris_the_wanderer . Please email AD/impact producer @toneontop Tonilyn.sideco @gmail .com and jess @jessxsnow .com with headshot, resume and reels if interested. Non actors welcome! This Sunday, I also need a Dad actor— a mandarin-speaking chinese male actor between 30-50 ) for my directing exercise Sunday between 2-4pm. This would count as an audition for Dad. ✨ feel free to share!
This painting of @shane .mcsauby abloom with pines for the permanent #BIPOC mural at @nyucmep was one of my favorite portraits I painted. Shane is a visionary #Anishinaabe filmmaker whose work is a portal to the decolonized future this world deeply needs. And that vision is no accident—I choose to include him on this mural not only due to the brilliant work he makes but of who he has consciously chosen to become. 🌟 As classmates in the the grad film program at NYU, I am honored to be a producer on his 2nd year film “Happy Thanksgiving,” starring a large native cast, and happy he will be crewing on mine. I hope to see his film through to the very end. Producing is a way of holding space for another director and gathering the right circumstances so magic can happen. I’ve been lucky to have been given a lot of space to find my voice & now I’m ready to cultivate that for my friends. I’ve been thinking about solidarity. How important it is to stand behind the work of our friends when they are still emerging or finding their voice. How this industry brainwashes indigenous, immigrant, queer and POC artists to feel small and unworthy of all of our brilliance. How our light and rage and gentleness is enough to set this empire ablaze & unearth the future that was always breathing underneath. How it is our responsibility to uplift indigenous leadership when we live on stolen land. How our communities are stronger when we stand together. In Shane’s films, native characters shine in a diversity of genres: a young girl discovers she has super powers, the transience and agelessness of a shared moment catalyzes a reconnection to land, and an activist carries out a revenge plan in a dark comedic thriller; I’m feeling very lucky to create with someone like @shane .mcsauby and you all should follow his journey too. 🙏🎬 #mural
