There are some clowns out there who are truly evil, who care for nothing for the truth or the health of our democracy, who live only to propagate lies and twist us towards their darkly corrupt will. “Red Clown 1” from Red Clown, Blue Clown, opening Jan 25 @coreyhelfordgallery #redclownblueclown

For Friday the 13th, here is my painting “Four Witches” from 2013, which is based on an etching by Albert Durer from 1497. I have a theory that we think of Friday the 13th as bad for two reasons, both based on misogynistic patriarchal Christianity. Friday was the day that belonged to the Goddess Venus in Rome,Freya in Norse mythology, (thus Friday=Freya’s day. ) 13 is an unlucky number because there are 13 full moons in the year. The moon was central to the practitioners of the religions and rituals that came before Christianity, a remnant of which this Durer piece perhaps represents.

“Still Life with Dralas” from 2005. Dralas are the little spirits that live in every single thing. This painting is a play on one by Henri-Horace Roland De La Porte, that hangs in the Norton Simon Museum.
Here’s some details of my “Pagan Madonna” which is on view in @dorothycircus Gallery’s Mother and Child exhibition, until June 4th
Today is Earth Day, a day I feel should be as important to all earthlings as yesterday’s holiday is to the Christians. To celebrate it here is my new painting I made for the “Mother and Child” show @dorothycircus Gallery in Rome. “Pagan Madonna” is a different take on the Christian image of the Madonna and Child. In the traditional iconography, a male child is held by an obedient female servant of a male God. In my version, a female child is “held” by Mother Earth herself. The moon floating in the clouds serves to symbolize the face of the Great Mother. The child points to her heart with one hand and gestures towards Earth with the other. This painting reflects my heartfelt conviction that, if the human race is to survive, patriarchal monotheism must give way to a new kind of spirituality, one which honors the Divine Feminine and recognizes our sacred connection to Nature and to the Earth. #earthday
