I keep getting older. #57
Apparently there is some speculation about what inspired my painting “God Yak”. I was inspired by the Ultraman Kaiju “Woo”. Woo lived on Phantom Mountain and protected a young orphaned girl named Yuki. Japanese monsters have been a source of inspiration to me since I was young. I understand the confusion, but when I made this painting I was completely unaware of the work of @anyaboz . I started painting these snow themed characters with my exhibition of 2009. Peace everyone and happy Winter Solstice.
Happy Friday the 13th!

Today Marion and I give thanks to #creaturasafari @kirsten_h_anderson and @mahoneymoho for the amazing adventure we had in Kenya. It’s hard to even put into words what a wonderful trip we had. The beauty of Africa is so deep and powerful that it’s almost impossible to describe. It was made accessible to us by people on the front lines of saving the magnificent wildlife they enabled us to witness more closely than we had ever dreamed of. We also got to visit the beautiful Masai people, so vibrant with life. It was an adventure full of excitement, yet incredibly comfortable, secure, and fun, an experience to treasure forever. It is fulfilling to know that our trip actually contributed in the struggle to preserve the beauty we were so privileged to witness. Thank you, Chris and Kirsten... you are good people doing good things for the planet, and you are also a total blast to hang out with! As well as our travel buddies @59meca , @thosanson , and Judy. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I’m having a show in Shanghai opening Friday the 13th of March, 2020. #SuperSpiritAnimals . How about a trip to China? 🇨🇳 I’d love to see you there! 😊 Kasmin and Perrotin are delighted to announce "Super Spirit Animals," a jointly organized exhibition of new works by American painter @markryden . Featuring over twenty works from the artist’s latest series, the exhibition will be on view at Perrotin’s Shanghai gallery from March 13, 2020. This also marks the artist’s first solo show in China. "Super Spirit Animals" presents a portrait gallery of enchanted characters that embody the artist’s meticulously-realized, signature blend of archetype, kitsch, and narrative mysticism. The artist's modern mythologies inseparably interweave twin senses of comfort and menace. “Most of my work engages with the relationship between the physical world and the spiritual world," Ryden has said. #MarkRyden @galerieperrotin #Kasmin #Shanghai Image: Mark Ryden, "God Yak ( #138 )," 2019, oil on canvas and hand-carved wood frame, 54 x 50 inches, 137.2 x 127 cm. Happy Halloween! ✨👻🎃💀👹🌙✨ “Slayer” 1999
Ten years ago today, deep in the rainforest of the great Pacific Northwest, we gathered with friends and family and held the most mystical of ceremonies and most festive of celebrations. We met by a goddess tree and exchanged our vows. 🌲🐿🌿👁🍄🌸🐝🎩 By the Love that lives in my Heart, by the Life that courses within my blood, and in the Name of the Spirit that resides within us all, I, Mark David Ryden, take thee, Marion Maganda Peck to my Soul, to be my chosen one, my Wife. I give you my Heart with the rising of the Moon and the setting of the Stars. 🌟🌙✨🌎✨🌞✨🔮 I promise to love you completely, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, through all that may come. I will honor and cherish you through this Life and into the next. ✨❤️✨👰✨🤵✨❤️✨
In today’s news, the EPA is “thrilled” to lift restrictions on sulfoxaflor, a pesticide known to eviscerate bee populations. This is heartbreaking and simply insane! How can people be so incredibly stupid? Bee populations are declining at a startling and terrifying rate. Their disappearance would mean the end of nature as we know it. If the bees go, we all go, folks. 🐝🌍😖 (Detail from The Creatrix, 2005 ) #savethebees #bees
For those of you who don’t know, #GregEscalante was the cofounder of Juxtapoz Magazine and one of the biggest supporters of Pop Surrealist art and artists. He was also an amazing, kind friend to everyone who knew him. Tragically, we lost Greg in 2017. Many of the artists he supported have donated art to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in honor of Greg. Several pieces in this collection will be on view there at LACMA this weekend only. This is one of my pieces in this collection, “Porcelain Meat Cart” from 2012. #lacma
On view this Saturday, June 29, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art @lacma “Wood Lincoln” my 14 color silkscreen on mahogany panel with hand carved frame 2012. A special collection viewing of highlights from a large group of recent acquisitions made in memory of Greg Escalante—gallerist, art collector, and long-time supporter of Pop Surrealist art and artists. This viewing takes place in the Study Center for Works on Paper in the Art of the Americas Building. #GregEscalante #Lincoln
