With access to approx 1% of my wardrobe, it was starting to look like I’d be wearing a tarpaulin for the entire duration of The High Low tour with perhaps a few Swarovski crystals scattered o’er it by @dollyalderton in order to ‘jazz it up.’ Thank god for @ceciliebahnsen who knows how to show this human marshmallow a good time.
📚Books I have loved since my last book stack at the end of April 📚 These have either been covered on past High Lows (don’t ask me which ep! Will be in the show notes ) or, as half of them are, on today’s bumper back to school special after our August break. I’ve been enjoying so much debut fiction this summer and in particular, the debut fiction of women. Plus, some fascinating non-fiction as I guzzle it by the truckload for essay research. Don’t ask me if any of them are ‘good’ because if I didn’t love it, it wouldn’t be here (plus, goodreads has all the snarky reviews you could possibly wish for. My personal M.O. is that if I don’t like it, I just don’t promote it. ) 💢 Important postscript 💢 I often get messages implying that the voracity of my reading habit can make other people feel shit about how much they read. This makes me sad bc reading a lot doesn’t make me in any way impressive, or diligent, just like meditation (which some people use to improve their mental health as I do reading ) doesn’t make you a paragon of virtue: reading is a choice I make that wouldn’t be possible if I loved cooking, or watched a lot of tv (one word: insomnia ), or went on Instagram daily, or went to the gym regularly. I’ve also been pregnant twice in the last 2 years, and have a toddler, so I spend a lot of time at home in the evenings!! Reading should be a pleasure, not a chore. Don’t let it become one. )

The podwife and I are thrilled to be going on tour later this year. The High Low Experience is a hybrid sensory journey, part Cirque de Soleil, part Paul Daniels Magic Show ( @dollyalderton is Debbie McGee, natch. ) Okay, fine, there’s no *actual* magic, but we promise to give you a magical time. We’ll be visiting London, Dublin, Manchester and Glasgow with @faneproductions in October and tickets go on sale on Friday 5th July at 10am. Link in bio to book!
Happy birthday @rosie_saunt ❤️ 28 years of friendship and I love you more each year
At last night’s @elleuk #ElleList Awards with my long-suffering and kind editor @hlucynat I was lucky to be a judge which meant I got to nominate some of my favourite writers ‘in ascent’ including Mim Skinner, Louise Callaghan and Candice Carty-Williams, even though they are ascending perfectly well, without any nominations from me, because great writers always rise to the top. You can read the full list of nominees in the current July issue. Thank you for my 💃 dress @catherinequin
Today’s author special of The High Low is with @nimkoali OBE, an anti-FGM campaigner and the author of What We’re Told Not To Talk About (But Are Going To Anyway ) comprising accounts from 42 women across 14 countries. In it, the self- proclaimed Chief Fanny Defender relays stories that shocked me, moved me and brought me to tears in equal measures. Mainly, it educated me. Did you know that many women who are genitally mutilated, develop a fistula - which can leave them incontinent (or doubly incontinent ) when the baby is born? It’s agonising and can lead to their community and family shunning them. The operation to repair a fistula only takes 30 mins but many women don’t have access to a clinic. Did you know that the highest rate of suicide amongst women is 50-54 - and that the average age of the menopause is 51? Have you ever imagined what it’s like to get your period on the street and have to choose between buying sanitary towels (because where do you dispose of the tampons ) over food? Nimko says: “FGM is not borne out of religion. It is organized crime.” Link in stories.

“Tracksuit bottoms are a reflection of the leisure we all constantly crave in a flexi-work world where the lines between office and home are increasingly blurred.” Making a rare photographic foray back into the pages of @theststyle to talk about how learning how to psychologically slow down, came curiously hand in hand with physical ease, too.
