Following the long tradition of marking the land with a building, architect Adam Richards’ new family home in the South Downs National Park in the south of #England dominates its pastoral setting with its monolithic, sculptural volume. Located on the site of a farm worker’s cottage, Nithurst Farm, as the family house is called, encapsulates Richards’ architectural sensibility as well as subtly references a trove of inspirations that have influenced his practice over the years. While being colour blind may seem like a great disadvantage for a visual artist, it can in fact also be an impetus to creativity. Such is the case for Austrian text-based artist @AnatolKnotek who instead of colours uses letters, words and minimalistic visual elements to create simple yet powerful works of visual poetry. Yatzer recently caught up with Knotek to talk about his work, his creative process and his passion for poetry. London-based interior design practice @DaytripStudio has a way of creating immaculately stylish interiors that nevertheless looks effortless and informal. “Powerscroft Road”, a renovated Victorian terraced house of subtle sophistication that tiptoes between the past and modernity, exemplifies this talent as well as a mastery of materials and tonality. An iceberg may have sunk the Titanic but its destructiveness is nothing compared to the havoc wreaked by plastic waste that ends up in the ocean (8 million tons annually to be exact ). To grasp the magnitude of the problem just think that the pieces of plastic currently clogging our oceans far outnumber the stars in our galaxy, or take a look at Mexican artist Jorge Gamboa's iconic image of an iceberg-like plastic bag – a picture after all is worth a thousand words (or numbers for that matter ). Designed in 2017 and featured on the cover of National Geographic @natgeo in 2018, #PLASTICEBERG viscerally conveys the menacing reality of plastic pollution and ominously implies that it's only the tip of the iceberg. Gamboa's image is currently on view at "Nature–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial" in New York, which explores how designers and scientists are tackling the environmental challenges confronting humanity. The exhibition runs until January 12, 2020. #DesignTriennial @cooperhewitt #GraphicDesign #PosterDesign #PlasticPollution #Iceberg #yatzer_inspiration
Located next to a Baroque chapel inside a former Jesuit convent in #Olomouc , the historic capital of #Moravia in the Czech Republic, Café Konvikt @konvikt_olomouc by Prague-based Denisa Strmiskova Studio @denisastrmiskova draws from its ecclesiastical and monastic context to conjure a mystical ambience that is nevertheless imbued with contemporary finesse that reflects the 16th century building’s current use as an academic institution and cultural centre. Taking advantage of the double-height space, a new mezzanine level expands the seating area and gives painter David Minařík the opportunity to create a deceptively weathered ceiling fresco using recycled fabrics and sustainable resin. The aged fresco is juxtaposed with a halo-like neon light fitting, echoed by a smaller version illuminating the mezzanine level above, while smaller and larger statues of the Virgin Mary, one of which is backlit by pink LEDs, further enhance the sense of monastic playfulness. Inspired by the Jesuits’ missionary expeditions to exotic places, a plethora of lush plants in combination with dark wood furniture, both bespoke and vintage pieces, soften the concrete and tiled surfaces, and further blur the distinction between past and present,Baroque and modern, monastic and secular. Contemporary school design has moved away from the traditional blueprint of identical, single-use classrooms embracing instead more fluid layouts and multi-functional spaces. This is all well and good for new educational projects but what about the existing school fabric? Enter Swiss design studio @zmik_spatialdesign hose latest endeavour, “Learning Scapes”, showcases the power of design to create modern learning environments even in historic buildings like St. Johann primary school in #Basel , a Neo-Renaissance edifice built in the 1880s. For a designer, colour selection combines both science and art. Despite the numerous theories, guidelines and manuals, there is a kind of alchemical reasoning and intuitive logic in choosing the “right” colour. Nowhere is this more pertinent than in the world of automotive design, and in particular concept cars, which embody a brand’s identity and vision. For an illustrative example, look no further than the recently unveiled BMW Concept 4 coupe, whose exhilarating, gleaming paintwork seductively named ‘Forbidden Red’, not only accentuates the vehicle’s muscular body and racy demeanour but also encapsulates @BMW ’s emotionally engaging design. You have to love the Scandinavians for coming up with warm and fuzzy concepts like Hygge (a feeling of cozy contentment ) and Fika (making time for friends to share a cup of coffee and chitchat ) but you have to love @Nespresso even more for channeling such qualities in its new Nordic-inspired Limited Edition coffees. Launched in partnership with acclaimed Danish designer Louise Campbell just in time for the festive season, the new nature-inspired, graphic capsules aren't only beautiful to behold and collect, they are also heavenly to drink as I recently discovered at the brand’s Athenian store ( @nespresso .gr ). With indulgent coffee flavours such as Nordic Almond Cake and Nordic Cloudberry, and a series of gift ideas like travel mugs and espresso cups, Nespresso’s Nordic-inspired range begs to be shared with your loved ones which is exactly what the holiday season demands. Plano, Illinois, is a long way from the European birthplace of architectural Modernism, both geographically and culturally, and yet it’s right here, amid an idyllic pastoral setting, where one of the most iconic modernist houses can be found: #MiesvanderRohe ’s @farnsworthhouse . Hovering above the forest floor, the pioneering steel-and-glass house is the apotheosis of Modernism’s less-is-more creed but it’s also a building inextricably tied to its surroundings. This complementary relationship between building and site is uncannily explored in “Geometry of Light”, a three-night, light and sound installation by @luftwerk in collaboration with @ikergil . #Milan is renowned for the its sophisticated interior design and stylish apartments but even amid such a refined context, this renovated apartment on Corso Sempione stands out in its trend-defying originality, decorative panache and refreshing glamour, courtesy of Turin-based design duo Marcante-Testa @marcantetesta . Housed in a late 1960s residential block, the apartment is a typical bourgeois Milanese home but there’s nothing typical, conventional or expected in Marcante and Testa’s striking interior design which harmoniously interweaves juxtaposing styles, materials and textures. Berberè Torino Centro is the 2nd Turin outpost of @berberepizzeria whose no-frills approach to artisanal pizza-making is reflected in the playful frugality of the venue’s stripped down interiors, courtesy of Bologna-based @RizomaArchitetture . Coming on the heels of the brand’s Navigli outpost in Milan, also by Rizoma, Berberè’s latest pizzeria in Torino comes alive by a whimsical wall painting by visual artists TO/LET which was inspired by the venue’s use as wine cellar in the 1930’s. Centred on a young boy that swims in red wine, the mural’s rich magenta extends throughout the space, colouring the historic building’s exposed brickwork as well as the new ribbed wood panelling, while the leather banquettes and brass light fittings further fan the flames of nostalgia. In retrospect, shifting consumer demand for natural, clean beauty products over the last few years should have been expected, not only as a backlash to the growing awareness of traditional cosmetic companies’ use of harmful chemicals, but also as a result of the rising importance of wellness. Two brothers who predicted the potential of such a market more than a decade ago are Jeremy and Keston Muijs whose Australian clean beauty label @GrownAlchemist has captured not only health-conscious consumers but also beauty aficionados the world over. With several new launches planned for next year, Yatzer recently caught up with Jeremy to talk about the company, the working relationship with his brother, and the brand’s future. Living in a contemporarily designed house has the benefit of timeliness and modernity; living in a historic building, on the other hand, offers timelessness and perspective. It’s seldom that we come across a project that so deftly combines both qualities as is the case with the Bolton Coach House in #Dublin , which seamlessly unites a renovated 18th century coach house and paper mill, and a new extension of contemporary sophistication, courtesy of local practice Kingston Lafferty Design @roisinlaffertykld . When it comes to introducing one’s self to the world, no one can accuse 30-year-old #Greekartist Kostas Lambridis of not thinking big. In August, the first ever loss of a glacier due to climate change was marked by a symbolic funeral in Iceland. Unfortunately, this is no isolated event; glaciers, polar land, and sea ice are melting much faster than scientists originally predicted and the latest projections talk of ice-free Arctic summers in 10 to 40 years. An immersive exhibition at #Stockholm ’s @Nordiskamuseet shines a light on Arctic life and the challenges facing the 4 million people living in region, while a new riveting photography book by French photographer @MichelRawicki examines another Arctic inhabitant affected by climate change, the #polarbear .
