The first video of our Atlantic crossing from North America to Lisbon is out now on youtube! Link in bio, the rest of the videos will be released during the following weeks. These videos give a great insight of life onboard and behind the scenes.
Impostors, trademarks, commercial interests, royalties and foundation... First: Unfortunately there are still people who are trying to impersonate me or falsely claim that they "represent" me in order to communicate with high profile people, politicians, media, artists etc. Please be aware that this is happening and be extremely suspicious if you are contacted by ”me” or someone saying they ”represent” me. I apologize to anyone who has been contacted - and even misled - by this kind of behavior. Second: My name and the #FridaysForFuture movement are constantly being used for commercial purposes without any consent whatsoever. It happens for instance in marketing, selling of products and people collecting money in my and the movement’s name. That is why I’ve applied to register my name, Fridays For Future, Skolstrejk för klimatet etc as trademarks. This action is to protect the movement and its activities. It is also needed to enable my pro bono legal help to take necessary action against people or corporations etc who are trying to use me and the movement in purposes not in line with what the movement stands for. I assure you, I and the other school strikers have absolutely no interests in trademarks. But unfortunately it needs to be done. Fridays For Future is a global movement founded by me. It belongs to anyone taking part in it, above all the young people. It can - and must - not be used for individual or commercial purposes. And third: together with my family I’m setting up a foundation. It’s already registered and existing, but it not is not yet up and running. This is strictly nonprofit of course and there are no interests in philanthropy. It is just something that is needed for handling money (book royalties, donations, prize money etc ) in a completely transparent way. For instance, taxes have to be paid before we can give them away to specified purposes and charities. This takes a lot of time and work, and when the foundation is fully up and running I will tell you more. The foundation’s aim will be to promote ecological, climatic and social sustainability as well as mental health. Love/ Greta
This Friday 5 representatives from Fridays For Future held a press conference in Davos. A news agency chose to edit the picture like above, cutting out @vanessanakate1 from the picture. This is totally unacceptable in so many ways. Like Vanessa said herself: “You didn't just erase a photo. You erased a continent.” #fridaysforfuture
We went to Davos and the World Economic Forum. A lot of people have been asking for “specific demands” and “things to do” to tackle the ongoing climate emergency. So we made some specific demands and those demands were ignored completely. But we didn’t expect anything else... This will take time. Since the crisis has never been treated as a crisis, the level of awareness is way too low for any real change to happen yet. But things are changing! And we will not give up. This is only the beginning.
“I wonder, what will you tell your children was the reason to fail and leave them facing the climate chaos you knowingly brought upon them? That it seemed so bad for the economy that we decided to resign the idea of securing future living conditions without even trying?” Here’s a clip from my speech addressing the #WorldEconomicForum in Davos today. Full speech at link in bio! #wef20
“We don’t want these things done by 2050, 2030 or even 2021, we want this done now - as in right now.” We are in a climate emergency. And in this new decade, every day will be crucial. I write with 20 other young activists from around the world, telling companies, banks, institutions and governments to abandon the fossil fuel economy. Read our demands for the #WorldEconomicForum in Davos at link in bio. #wef20 #davos
This graph from @carbonbrief shows how fast we need to cut our emissions of CO2 to stay within the remaining carbon budget for 1,5°C of global temperature rise. It basically illustrates what I’ve been saying in all my speeches since this summer. It's time to start asking our elected officials how they are going to achieve this... Or let them explain why we should give up on the 1,5°C target, and by doing so significantly increase the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control. And make sure they understand that this is for a 66% chance of staying below 1,5°C of average temperature rise, and that 66% does not include the global aspect of equity, most feedback loops, non-linear tipping points nor additional warming hidden by air pollution. This can no longer be news among other news, an "important topic" among other topics, a "political issue" among other political issues or a crisis among other crises. This is not party politics or opinions. This is a scientific fact. This is an existential emergency. And we must start treating it as such. Because unless we start to focus everything on this, our targets will soon be out of reach. I know it shouldn’t be up to you and me to make sure that the science from the IPCC reaches the public but unfortunately this is how it is. So please share! Australia is on fire. And the summer there has only just begun. 2019 was a year of record heat and record drought. Today the temperature outside Sydney was 48,9°C. 500 million (!! ) animals are estimated dead because of the bushfires. Over 20 people have died and thousands of homes have burned to ground. The fires have spewed 2/3 of the nations national annual CO2 emissions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The smoke has covered glaciers in distant New Zealand (! ) making them warm and melt faster because of the albedo effect. And yet. All of this still has not resulted in any political action. Because we still fail to make the connection between the climate crisis and increased extreme weather events and nature disasters like the #AustraliaFires That has to change. And it has to change now. My thoughts are with the people of Australia and those affected by these devastating fires. (Photo: Matthew Abbott for The New York Times )
